Russia and the International Atomic Energy Agency are to sign an agreement on the MBIR International Research Centre during the 60th Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference to be held next month in Vienna.

Russian regulator Rostechnadzor issued a construction licence for MBIR - the Russian acronym for multipurpose sodium-cooled fast neutron research reactor – in May last year. The reactor complex will be located at the site of the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors, in Dimitrovgrad. Citing comments by RIAR director Alexander Tuzov at his meeting with the governor of the Ulyanovsk region, Sergey Morozov, RIAR said the agreement will support the IAEA's recognition of the centre.

RIAR is known as NIIAR in Russia.
