The Armenian government has decided to extend the operating life of the country’s only nuclear power plant until a replacement reactor starts operating.

The 376 MWe VVER-440 unit at Metsamor was scheduled to shut down in 2016, but will now continue operating until a planned new VVER-1000 reactor starts there up in 2019 or 2020, the cabinet ruled.

The Metsamor plant provided about one-third of Armenia’s electricity in 2011.
