The All-Russia Research Institute of Automatics (VNIIA) in 2013 plans to finish development of a seismic monitoring and remote reactor protection system for nuclear power plants, Deputy Chief Designer of VNIIA Igor Kremlev told journalists.

“We are developing a seismic monitoring and remote preventive protection system for reactor installations of nuclear power plants, which will generate a signal for automatic actuation of the reactor emergency protection in case of a seismic impact. The system will be placed around the nuclear power plant at a distance of dozens of kilometers,” he said.

According to Kremlev, the institute plans to finish the system development next year. The system is developed under an order from Rosenergoatom. He noted that the system will send the protection actuation signal before destruction of or damage to the NPP control and protection systems, including control rods.
