The Bushehr NPP in Iran has officially been put in operation.
Russian Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko, the head of ROSATOM (the Russian nuclear agency) Sergey Kirienko and the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation Fereydoon Abbasi Davani took part in the startup ceremony of the first power-generating unit. At present the unit is working at 35-40% of its capacity and will reach the target capacity in 2-3 months.
The construction of the first Iranian NPP was started by the German Kraftwerk Union company in 1975. However, because of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran and the following armed conflict with Iraq, the construction work was stopped.
In January 1995 Russia and Iran signed an agreement on the completion of the construction of the first power-generating unit of the Bushehr NPP and in 1998 a turnkey contract on the construction of the whole facility.
