15th April 2019, Sochi, Russia – During the 11th Atomexpo International Forum, ROSATOM unveiled the new “Mission: Talent” initiative together with its partners, WorldSkills Russia and BCG, aimed at dealing with one of the most pressing issues of our time: the growing skills gap and talent deficit.
As part of the ‘Mission: Talent’ initiative, the three partners are working on a global study to research best practices in human resources development against the current background of unprecedented economic, technological and social changes the world is currently facing.
To kick-off the initiative, the ATOMEXPO-2019 Forum hosted several events including an HR manager breakfast followed by an afternoon roundtable discussion “Human Capital as a Factor for Economic Growth: From National Interests to International Cooperation” attended by leading skills experts from academia, business and government (click here for the full list of roundtable participants) who were able to exchange new ideas, share best practice examples and discuss potential solutions to the ‘skills gap’ issue.
“As a company, working on a global scale, both with industrialised and emerging market economies, we see that talent shortage is an important challenge for everyone,” said Tatyana Terentyeva, Chief Human Resources Officer, ROSATOM. “When you consider the current skills mismatch that exists around the world, that’s a problem affecting over billion people. It’s imperative that together we look for new approaches, tools and ways to tackle this issue. That’s why we’re launching our joint ‘Mission: Talent initiative’ which is not just a one-off project, but a sustained programme starting from collaborative research and open discussion with our partners from government, academia and corporate sector.”
WorldSkills Russia Director General, Robert Urazov, added: “Developing human resources for the future world economy is one of the key challenges currently facing the global community. Some skills are fast becoming obsolete. For example, certain technical skills are becoming obsolete two to three times faster than 50 years ago which is leading to a severe talent deficit. We hope that the ‘Mission: Talent’ initiative will help address this issue effectively.”
Referring to BCG’s role in “Mission: Talent”, Konstantin Polunin, Partner and Associate Director, explained: “For BCG, being part of ‘Mission Talent’ is a great honor and privilege. We hope that our international expertise and global network will contribute towards targeting the existing skill gaps by identifying best practices from around the world. We’re confident that together, we can try to overcome the fundamental human and economic challenges caused by the growing talent deficit. We’re certain that issues of this magnitude can only be resolved through a consolidated effort of all stakeholders on both a global and national scale.”
During the event, ROSATOM’s Chief HR Officer highlighted best practice examples developed by the company over many years in planning long-term by developing and nurturing talent.
The audience heard how ROSATOM was building a ‘talent ecosystem’ that accompanies the individual on his/her career journey starting at the kindergarten, via the school, the university all the way to the company itself. Currently the ‘talent ecosystem’ comprises some 400 kindergartens and schools, over 230 colleges and universities and a career advancement system for the company’s 260,000 employees across 400 nuclear companies and R&D institutions.
ROSATOM prides itself on an 83% employee engagement rate and for being recently named Best Employer of Russia, based on the results of the survey by one of the most reputable Russian consulting companies Headhunter.
Looking forward, ROSATOM is the National Strategic Partner of the 45th WorldSkills Competition that will take place in Kazan, Russia on 22nd to 27th August 2019 with more than 1,600 young professionals from over 60 countries competing in 56 skills which will also include the WorldSkills Conference to highlight best practice examples and possible solutions to the global skills and talent shortage.
