Rusatom Overseas (a part of the ROSTATOM) and Gazprom Neft have signed an agreement on cooperation in hydrogen energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The document was signed by Evgeny Pakermanov, President of Rusatom Overseas, and Vadim Yakovlev, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board, Gazprom Neft, in the framework of the 10th Anniversary St Petersburg International Gas Forum.
Companies have agreed to explore the possibilities of transporting and storing of carbon dioxide generated in the process of hydrogen production within ROSATOM projects on Sakhalin Island. Gazprom Neft will investigate technical and commercial aspects of carbon dioxide utilization. The parties will also consider collaboration in the other areas associated with decarbonization of production facilities. Deployment of carbon dioxide utilization technologies meets sustainable development goals (SDGs), and is gradually becoming a common practice in the industrial sector.
ROSATOM plans to build a hydrogen plant on Sakhalin Island to produce hydrogen from natural gas. The facility is expected to generate from 30,000 up to 100,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year. Russian state corporation will evaluate Gazprom Neft’s experience in developing a closed-cycle of CO2 capture and its injection at depths of several kilometres as well as its potential to apply these technologies within the Sakhalin hydrogen plant project. Similar solutions have been successfully deployed by Serbia’s NIS (a joint venture between Gazprom Neft and the Republic of Serbia) at the Rusanda field.

By all means our cooperation with Gazprom Neft in organising carbon dioxide treatment and utilization within hydrogen projects on Sakhalin will play a key role in the development of a carbon-free economy in this region as well as contribute to deploying the best technological solutions on the island. We also see prospects for cooperation in the area of decarbonisation in other regions of Russia. We are looking forward to working together,” said Evgeny Pakermanov, President, RAOS PJSC.
