Federal Law on Management of Radioactive Waste was adopted in 2011 for the first time ever in Russian nuclear industry. The law dictates mandatory final disposal (“burial”) of all historic and newly generated domestic radioactive waste, with setting up a unified state RW management system and establishing a national operator. Federal state unitary enterprise ‘National Operator for Radioactive Waste Management’ is the sole organisation in Russia authorised by RF Government to carry out activities relating to final isolation of radioactive waste and arrangement of relevant infrastructure.

By now, design work has been completed on a deep RW repository, and activities are in progress to implement the project that will enable final disposal of all radioactive waste accumulated over the entire period of Russian nuclear programme.
